I don't know if they still make clamps that you can install in the spaces between the springs. You tighten the clamps, drawing the two coils closer together. They were around in the 1950s-1960s. They worked similar to a coil spring compressor (used for spring removal) but on a much smaller scale. Otherwise, don't mess with cutting springs. They are specially heat treated to maintain their properties.

Yep, they still exist. I saw them on Amazon.com for $8 per spring. Called coil spring spacers.

When you torch off a coil you've raised the spring rate making it stiffer AND changing the hardness of the coil wire.. It's impossible to cut a coil with a hack-saw.

No, your friend is an idiot.

Springs are not just a piece of coiled metal, they're a precision made article with specific properties engineered into them, mess around with them at your peril.

Just the heat generated by cutting them can seriously alter their performance.

Don't be a mug.

It can be done, but personally I wouldn't reccomend it. It's just like when you cut springs on a car to lower it, it weakens the springs and plus it's an MOT failure (If tester noticed).

You need to hang with smarter friends. When you run with idiots, you become an idiot and cut your coil springs.

Yea but it's not really the right way to do it and it'll give you problems forever. Save up, get the right parts and do it correctly, that way there will be no regrets down the road.

If you have a tangential end type of spring, it can be safely cut. But if you have a square end or pigtail type of spring, those should be swapped for shorter springs, not cut.

xt 350 yes

You can. But the spring really needs to be stiffer because you will have less wheel travel, but if you drive real care full it might work . I WOULD NOT but it is not my car.

I don't think that's a good idea. Are you sure there's no adverse side effect after that so-called friend of yours done it?

NO, you can not cut a coil spring.

No you will weaken the springs and the engine could bottom out .

Yes - one way to lower your ride height. . . . just be aware that besides how it looks and lessening your road clearance, it will also change handling and will require realignment.

ADDED: For those who say it can't be done: suggest you Google something like " cutting coil springs - cars" and check one of the thousands of "how-to" sites that come-up - some amateur, some recognized spring manufacturers/suppliers/shops.

NO............nutty idea,,,,,the spring is made to specific dimentions............,,,,,to fit in the spring pockets,..............and stay in place.............( anyway you'd have a major job,...springs are very,...very..tough material)
