single phase is one of the three phases of an electric power plant generator. used in residential and light industrial buildings. the machines and loads that use single phase power are relatively light duty power requirements

three phase uses all three phases of the power plant generator. These loads are heavy duty for heavy industry like 100 horse power motors, fans, huge ovens etc.

Each system is good for its intended purpose. 3 phase systems are good for high loads, but require an additional wire or two which costs money. single phase is good for lower loads and residential distribution for an economical amount of wire.

The loads on 3 phase are usually not perfectly balanced, because connections are made to single phase applications along the way, and there is no predicting the actual loads these single phase loads are relative to the single phase loads on the other 2 phases. Generally, long distance transmission is 3 phase down to the homes subdivision, and from there( within the subdivision) is all single phase. Industry often is located in a dedicated area with 3 phase power available.

three phase is cheaper to generate power from the generator, and more economical to distribute large amounts of power. single phase is cheaper to distribute small amounts of power in a small area.

industries & light Industries - Lighting ,Fans, Air Conditioners, Hand Drilling Machines, Portable Grinders, Exhaust Fan, Hand dryers- Table Grinder. Some single phase Multipurpose Machines Etc.

2) 3 phase All the R,Y,B Phases connected to a consumers of power more than 2KW b) Domestic - water pumps, Kitchen Stove, centralised HVAC equipment's Etc.

Industrial & Light Industries - Power More than 2Kw are used in Three phase power- All Machine Shop Machines are 3 Phase (like Drilling Machines , Lathes, Milling Machine, Boring Machines wielding Machines, Cutting shears, centralised HVAC equipment's Etc.

3) Three phase is Much better high efficiency, Transmission cost Less compare only single phase Transmission.

4) Power Company recommending to follow to use Balanced Power to the consumer & All are following as a Standard. For a Huge amount of Power Generation & Transmission 3 Phase only Much Better than Single Phase yield high efficiency & Cost reduction.. I have given you examples of Single phase consumer product -there single phase only easily used (for most of the domestic Day to Day application single phase only safer in Domestic needs). Single phase is when you have one positive wire and one neutral wire.

I have the questions about power supply in the USA:

(1) What is single phase supply? When and where are single phase supplies used? (residential, industry, light industry, what type of machines, etc.)

(2) What is three - phase supply? When and where are three- phase supplies used? (residential, industry, light industry, what type of machines, etc.)

(3) Which is better? Single-phase or three-phase?

(4) Are power generation and transmission always balanced three-phase? Is single phase is only at the user end?

(5) Why not we always use only one type of system? Say only single phase or only three-phase everywhere. Why do two type of systems (single and three-phase) exist?
