I always shut my engine to avoid waste and noise, but it is remotely possible that an engine idling with no load given clean motor oil might polish itself. I don't say that this is scientific. It is more widely agreed that running at highway speeds is good for a car. The amount of wear taking place when the idling engine is doing no work must be insignificant.

Well it does do a little more wear and tear on the valve train and piston rings have been known to stick causing oil burning problems. It s due to the lack of load on the engine for an extended period of time. Never a good idea. Some of these answers you got are wacky!
