When should the engine light be on.?

HUH??? Check Engine Light will stay on all the time if you just got the key on/engine off. A lot of the newer cars do that including GM as well. If it goes out once you start it, its all good. Nothing is wrong

It does come on for a bulb check & other system checks. It stays on cause it hasnt finished its system checks cause the engine hasnt started

If the engine light is only on when the key is in the on position and the engine is not running, there is nothing to worry about. That is just a bulb check to make sure the bulb is working. If it doesn't come on with the key in the on position and engine off, then the bulb needs changing.

You check engine light should always come on when you start your car to prove it is working.

any auto parts store can read the codes for free and tell you what is wrong.

I have a Toyota Corolla that just seems to run a bit weird. I changed the spark plugs about 15,000-20,000 miles ago. It was the first time in that car. I have had it for 6 years. The gas pedal whistles when I press it, and the RPM and speedometer needles goes way up as I am starting the car, then back down to the norm (600-800 for RPM and 0 for speed) when the car actually starts/idles. The engine light only illuminates when the key is in the on position. I am calling my mechanic tomorrow, but just wondering what the issue could be. It does pull a bit, so am going to see about getting a front end alignment. But, wondering what else the issues could be. The engine light does not stay on. Shouldn't it if there is some type of issue?

Thanks
