Can I use 240V appliances in 120V (same Hz) without damaging them ?

There are some relatively inexpensive adapters that can be purchased, but that is a significant amount of power and the adapter must be rated for the 2,000 watts.

Hair dryer... Probably won't damage it, but it is NOT advised. The motor will *Probably* just run slower (*about* half speed, no, not 1/4), but then again, it may not run at all. The heater will not get anywhere near as hot at 1/4 the power.

...

Also, your calculation is incorrect. As a first approximation, at half the voltage it will draw ONE HALF the current and the power will be one fourth (about 500W). The heater will draw 1/4, but the motor will probably draw something more than 1/4.

...

BTW many hotels and motels will have hair dryers in the room.

Cheers, from one of those 4 year Electrical Engineers mentioned elsewhere, but with 36++ years further experience... (;-)

The answer is going to depend on the device used. Typically, going to a lower voltage is going to result in simply weaker performance. However, some devices may not work at all and others could have other harmful unintended consequences. The device is designed for a certain voltage. Anything too much above or below risks damaging the device.

And to determine what your device will do will be near impossible as it will depend on the parts used to manufacturer it, how well it was put together, what tolerances were used, and a host of other factors.

So if you travel to another country with 120V, you risk taking a device that could either harm you, harm the device, or simply not work leaving you lugging a paper weight back.

In the case of motors, there is a starting torque which depends on voltage applied. If the starting torque is not adequate, the motor will not start running and this could end up in motor burning..

Normally it is not advisable to run the 220V equipment in 110V, but there is no harm in trying, but be aware of what happens in the first few seconds. or half a minute. If no smoke comes, then it is perhaps ok. the case of a refrigerator is different. If compressor does not start up, it fails and you will ahve to look for a new refrigerator. usually a low voltage can create a problem in refrigerator.

220V Hair Dryer use in 110 V it will produce 1000 W heat , but the blowing speed is less.If you satisfied with that speed its ok.It will not at all damage any part it will serve long time(Generally they are using Universal motor for the blower Motor.I am using it in same way it work better..

NO NO NO NO

fro several reason they will not work well.

electric motors are build for specific voltage and current and frequency

that is why Electrical engineers go to University for at least 4 years.

YES, NO TROUBLE AT ALL !

THE HAIR DRIER BECOMES TURNING SLOW AND PRODUCE LESS HEAT.
