Servo motor control circuit comparison?

Posted at: 2015-01-07
Either one will work. Rick is not quite on the money; the duty cycle (the characteristic that controls the servo) is set by the ratio of resistances between pins 6-7 and 7-8, and both of these circuits will control duty cycle (with the unwanted added benefit of changing frequency as well).

The way servos work is, every pulse turns them on briefly, and the width of the pulse (between 1 and 2 milliseconds) controls the setpoint. So it's not a big deal if you send pulses more frequently for lower values. This is how most hackaday/make/etc circuits work.

You will likely find that the second circuit is wildly unstable in noisy environments because there's not enough filtering for the power supply. If you build either one and the servo jitters all over the place, especially when other components of your system are operating, add more caps.

This is where you look in your parts bin and see how many parts you already have. Select the circuit based on what you have on hand.

Neither of these are any good, because they both provide a fixed pulse length to the motor. In order to control a servo motor you should have both position and velociy feedback.

So i have to servo position control circuits and i was wondering which is a better circuit to use....
