I am working on a petrol station on minimum wages and i am been told that if i have a drive off on my shift then i have to pay for it. what does law says about it

If thats the case ask them would they rather have you run after the car and leave the shop and till unattended or remain at the work station and take note of the number plate to report it immediately. Also you may as well ask for commission for every litre of fuel sold! I think it's just a joke among the staff but it definitely shouldnt be like that. Which company is it for? BP, SHELL? If the manager insists that you still need to pay, contact head office and discuss the case.

That's ridiculous. Don't risk your life for a tank of gas. I had beer runs all the time in the store I worked at overnights and I was never docked for it. Management even told me "just let them run or call the stockers to block them in, do not get hurt over a stupid case of beer" Your employer's insurance is supposed to cover thefts. If they try to enforce this practice of making employees pay for thefts, then they may be violating a lot of codes or ordinances or laws in regards to operating their business and having everything on the up and up. So... if they withhold something like this from your paycheck, then get your revenge by calling the health department, code enforcement, or whatever agency

law is going to vary by where you live.

Yahoo is universal but laws vary by states/provinces/territories, and countries. It would help if you mentioned where you are.

Where I live, there were no laws against an employer doing that but a few years ago, an attendant was killed ( he tried to block the vehicle but was run over by the car as the thief fled ) after a pump n' dash. Subsequently a law was passed that no gas station employee could be held accountable for fuel theft.

@ powder monkey..I'm on the Yahoo.ca site and I can still see this question. If I can see this through the Canadian site, it is indeed a universal site.

They can't make you pay for drive offs but you will struggle stopping them from deducting it from your wages.

I'd tell them to stick their job.

Jay P, yahoo may be 'universal' but it helps to have the ability to work out which site you are on. This is the UK and Ireland site. It's not difficult.

You've obviously got your settings on 'all English questions ' then and not just Canadian questions. It's not our fault you've chosen to be on international settings. Most if the other contributors know exactly where the questioner is based.

That's bollocks. There should be CCTV at the station which records all reg. nos. The police are called if theft occurs. It is the responsibility of the management to ensure security. As long as you are diligent that's all they can expect. Cheeky bastards. Christopher is away with the fairies.

Here in UK it is not your responsibility to pay for till shortages, contact ACAS www.acas.org.uk and they will confirm it, Good Luck

What matters is what your employment contract says about it. If that is what your contract says, then the law will back it, because when you took the job you accepted the contract.

You may have to pay for it but there are rules about how much you have to pay and at what rate.

If your management are going to be like that then all you can do is protect yourself.

Write down the reg number on a form and the pump number before you allow the pump to be authorized.

When they finish write the amount next to the reg and pump number. If they drive off call the police.

Check with CAB if your boss is acting legally.
