The dealer have computers that can read codes out of the trans. Most others don't have the money to purchase programs for all the makes and models so they would gladly sell you a new trans and hope it works.
Sorry to hear you are having a concern with your PT Cruiser, you may want to have an authorized Chrysler dealer diagnosed the vehicle to determine if you need a major transmission repair or something simple like a switch being replaced.

Have a free OBD code check done at a car part store , or buy your own code reader and do it. The trouble codes will tell what is wrong.
Thank you all for the info just trying to avoid towing the car from shop to shop, You don't know who to trust. when one said needs a complete overhaul, one said they would need to tear it down to see what the problem is, another said it is switches and solonid
I was driving no check engine lights parked went shopping. After I started it would only go into low gear. I could not shift it into reverse or drive. One shop told me I needed a new transmission another said possibility sincere switch. Is there any way to check the switch and will the computer tell me if this is the problem
