It can stand very high temperatures so it's used inside crucibles that melt metal, in coal-burning powerplants, ceramic kilns, heat-treating ovens, stuff like that.

About the heavy dense heat resistant firebricks, standard size or other firebrick products of different shapes. There are two types of firebricks where each is produced from fire clay. This page deals with the heavy fire brick kind which absorbs the heat into its mass very well. Mr Smartypants is correct. One of my customers is a zinc refinery. They take powdered zinc, heat it over 2,000° in a fire brick lined furnace ( called smelting) . You can't use those bricks for anything else.....except make a fire pit or something like that
