Can you burn up synchros trying to engage in too low of a gear?

If you can get it just right, everything will be OK, but if it is not right, (and by dropping several gears , it is less likely to be right), then yes it will be hard on the synchos.

The main task of the synchro is to adjust the rpms of two shafts about to be coupled. Once this is achieved, a sleeve connects the two. Obviously, the synchro wasn't able to do the work and it prevented the operation.

Yes, it will eventually damage the transmission. Going from 5th into 1st is suicidal for both your transmission and wallet.

You may not be over revving the engine but you are causing chaos in the gear box. Remember the clutch separates the engine from the gear box, it does not separate the road wheels from the gear box. If the road wheels are doing 45mph and you engage a gear designed to drive the road wheels at no more than 10 mph you are likely to blow the box.

It's not doing your gearbox any good, and will probably cause increased wear on various parts. IF you do get it into a gear that's too low, then all sorts of other havoc can result as well.

anytime you beat on a piece of equipment the damage is done. its not a game, there is no magic fix. when its had enough abuse itll frag.

Say you're in 5th and try to go into 1st gear, (not engaging or releasing the clutch) obviously that would over-rev the engine, but just attempting to engage it.

I did this going about 45mph and tried to drop into first, although it didn't work, I heard my transmission rev up, but never engaged.

my question is does that ruin the synchros because you're trying to drop into such a low gear?
