Is it okay to just change engine oil but not the oil filter?

There are two reasons why it's not a good idea to do what you suggest. Firstly, you don't actually know how "full" the filter is of contamination... so if the filter is near the end of it's useful life cycle at the time you change your oil... then for the entire time you are on that new oil change the filter is doing less and less to clean that oil. By the end of your second oil life cycle that filter may be too clogged to be effective which in turn means contamination is passing through and the filter isn't doing much of anything. This leads to shorter engine life... all because you wanted to save 3 minutes and $5

The second point is that you are passing much cleaner oil through a dirty filter... which takes out some of the benefits of your newly changed oil as you are prematurely introducing more contamination than is necessary. And again, all for the benefit of 3 minutes and 5 bucks.

So is it ok? yea I guess technically it's ok.. but is it worth it? or is it smart to not change the filter? no... it's no worth it and not smart.

NO. Depending on the year make and model of your car, the oil filter can contain up to one quart of used engine oil. A little fact you may be not aware of: When an oil filter becomes loaded with contaminants and can not hold any more, the *bypass valve opens in the filter and *no more oil is filtered!

Ever seen a dirty air filter(home or car) ?

It's the same with the oil filter too.

Put the best filter you can afford on when changing the oil. Do that for the air filter too.

If you really want to you could loosen the filter and drain it that way. I have gone on the every other schedule on a buick skylark and never had any problem. But today they are selling up-scale filters which probably means the normal ones are now cheap and shoddy. If the oil is black and thick looking you wil probably want to change the filter anyway. It is always just as well to change it.

NO it is not okay that method, you must replace oil and oil filter, the main reason is that you don't know if your oil filter is full polluted, if you don't change the oil filter, your oil will be polluted and you're wasting time and money.

if you just replace oil and oil filter your engine will have all the properties and will have been super cleaned.

The last idiot that did something this stupid seized his motor up! When the oil filter traps the dirt it plugs up the filter element. Then the oil by-passes the filter if you are lucky. then the dirt gets pumped through out the motor eventually ruining the bearings. If you are not lucky the oil pressure drops and the motor seizes sooner. Trying to save $6? LMAO!!! You must be one of those people that doesn't flush the toilet to save water and lets the turds float until overflowing the bowl!

It would be foolish economy: even a name-brand filter is quite inexpensive in comparison to the cost of the oil. Also, modern car oil filters are quite small in comparison to those of some years ago - would take less to clog, so I always change.

Remove the dip stick, wipe the oil on you hand does it look really dirty, often it does not, so then you will be OK to not change filter. To much good oil is thrown out.

Always change the filter!!! Drop the $4-5 bucks to get one. What do ya think a filter does???

Purolator is a decent brand, but try to stay away from the knock-off brands.

Just change tthe filter, most oil changing kits are cheap enough to include a pretty good filter

It is better to change the filter every 1500 miles, so you always have clean filtration and not starving your engine of oil.

That leaves a quart of dirty oil, you would actually do less harm by just changing the filter and add one quart of new oil

With good quality oil, the filter change is more important than the actual oil change.

*Always* change the filter.

keep in mind im not a mechanic, but if your engine is clean and not pre-owned, you can sit on oil for about 18000miles(checking,FILLING PREODICALLY) then, full oil and filter, then 12000 full oil and filter keeping under 12000miles between oil and filter cleansing.

No, it is not "okay" (whatever you think THAT means). It *may* be better than not changing it at all, but the old filter is still full of metal particles, grit, and - of course - the old, acidified, worn-out, contaminated oil -- which will immediately circulate in the engine and reduce the effectiveness of the clean oil. Even the cheapest generic filter is better than a clogged one. If the filter bypass engages because the old filter is too dirty, the engine oil will not be filtered AT ALL, or you may suddenly have NO oil pressure if the bypass malfunctions (or if the filter doesn't have one, like a cartridge-type filter).

Are you thinking of not changing the filter because you're too cheap, really lazy, or just dumb?

you dont change all of the oil that way and the filter already has some material in it. i would not do it for long like that.

Why bother changing the oil at all . . . most likely the filter is and has been plugged and is and has been bypassing your dirty oil directly to your bearings, camshaft and cylinder walls!

Whenever I changed my oil, I would change the filter every other time. However, to keep the inner parts of your engine cleaner, then change your filter every time.

It is ok but not wise! If you have just done it in the last 2 months it will be ok . Look at the old oil inside of your crankcase and if it is fairly clean then you can pull it off

filters aren,t dear. I would change both. If a jobs worth doing

you can but what your doing is leaving a quart of dirty oil in your engine and that,s not good !

You already know. Just another question from a major troll on Answers. How many questions do you ask a day to gratify yourself?

That's like taking a shower and then wearing the same dirty clothes again.

no because clean oil will get dirty very quickly

no

That's kinda like wiping your butt but never changing your drawers!

Never!

Dude no

Not good at all

Not at all.
