Is it possible that a massive repair job has inhibited the rear hatch door s ability to open easily?

It's possible that the hinges are now not 100% lined up, because of the damage / repair. Not enough to notice visually, but enough to cause some binding in the hatch's movement.

Probably a difficult thing to get 100% right too.

If the hinges don't bind for 1/3 of their travel - I don't think that's the problem. I would suspect that one of the struts has a bend in it.

Bring the vehicle back. Park it in his way. Give him the keys and tell him to call you when the hatch opens properly. Then leave. If he won't fix it, take him to the courthouse.

no

My 09 Matrix XRS was in the shop for a month and a half after some idiot in a huge truck demolished the rear driver s side of the car. The repairs are complete, but the hatch doesn t open like it used to. It opens a 3rd of the way on its own and then requires some strength to get it the rest of the way open.

They had found and installed a new section of the body that was damaged and the point at which it was welded on is clearly visible on the upper left side of the hatch. Could the angle of the weld be causing excess pressure on the struts, causing them to not be strong enough?

The owner of the shop tried to explain it away as normal deterioration, but it wasn t so difficult to open before it was in the shop.
