Smoke and burning rubber smell coming from under Hood help?

Geez. You are going to college. You must have a Vocational wing to the college that teach Trades such as Automotive mechanics, Carpentry, Engineering and the like. They are always looking for cars to fix. No worries if a training student is working on your car, as it is overseen by the Instructor(who is a mechanic) so you get your wheels back for the cost of the parts. It is sucking air, by the sounds of it, out of vacuum hoses and maybe the odd leaking gasket. About $50. without seeing it. But 12 years and the hoses go.

Having a LOW battery also makes the engine idle faster as it is trying to charge the battery. Battery is most likely in need of replacement...with new. You can price that out as this normally happens prior to winter.

. Cars do not explode(as you see on T.V. - there they ADD TNT to the car so it explodes into a fireball which makes it more exciting a show. Otherwise cars just land like a rock. No boom, no bang. That is the TRUE boring reality of it.

Bring the car to a mechanic

Replace belt

maybe a broken exhaust system blowing hot exhaust onto wiring or something rubber? Your starter? battery cables?

I have a 92 Subaru imprezza

Problem number one is by car revs between 2 and 3 when in park (it's automatic ) so I tend to stay in drive just fully stopped instead of putting it in park unless turning my car off because the Loud rev noise is offputting.

After jump starting today car wasn't fully dead but just wouldn't start I had it in park and it rev really Loud after jump start and the engine hot cold sign went just over halfway (normally is on half) so I paniced and turned if off. I got out and could smell burning rubber and engine had a small amount of smoke from under the Hood! What could be wrong and how much $$$ am I looking at, is it safe to drive -poor student with no car knowledge
