Will warped heads affect compression when starting? 92 cutless supreme S 3.1 v6.?

I replaced my head gasket now when I try to start it it turns over then lags and back fires out of the intake.

Yes, a warped head will cause leaks between the cylinders or to the outside. You did check the flatness of the head and block when you replaced the head gasket, didn't you? It sounds like you have other problems. A warped head would not cause back fires unless it is really warped.

Unless I'm mistaken, this engine does not have a distributor so having the timing wrong should not be an issue.

Its more likely that the ignition firing order is wrong -or- that some of the pushrods have been mixed-up and one is bent, they are different lengths.

The other poster "Mike" is correct, you mixed up the push rods, the exhaust are longer than the intakes, so now you have an intake valve that is staying open.

NOTE: Intake backfiring is normally caused by over-retarded ignition timing.

sounds like a timing issue to me....

cracked or warped heads are not a good thing but the engine would run, but you would have oil in water and water in oil. also it would run hot and probably smoke.

But if you did replace the head gasket and did not take the heads to a machine shop to be checked and if warped then resurfaced you just wasted your time.

good luck, take to a shop and have them fix it for ya.

Yes, they will. However, intake backfire indicates WAY advanced ignition timing, bet you got the distributor in wrong. #1 cyl. to TDC compression stroke, pull distributor and re-align so rotor points at #1 spark plug tower on cap. Make sure firing order is correct. Good luck.
