I need to know how to make a coil so I can make electricity.?

You want to build a generator. The principle is that moving a magnet in relation to a wire will cause a current to flow in the wire. The closer the wire to the magnet, the stronger the magnet and the faster the rate of movement of the magnet, the greater will be the current flow.

It is particularly the rate of movement of the magnet which helps in this regard. If you put the magnet on a shaft and spin it so that the north and the south poles are alternately presented to your coil, then you will get the maximum effect. While you have got one coil on one side of your spinning shaft, you might as well have another coil on the other side to double the pickup.

It is even better if the coil is not air-filled but is wound over a rod of soft iron to increase the inductive effect.

What I have described is a generator with a permanent magnet rotor and a coil stator, which is not the usual arrangement. The usual arrangement is a permanent magnet stator and a rotating coil, but then you need an arrangement of carbon brushes for taking the current from the moving coil.

Hi all! OK. I understand how to wind a coil as far as physically winding it but, what I can't find any info on is which way to spin the coil and after its spun, which side I should use to pass the magnet by, if it even matters which side I use.

I took a screw. not sure what kind of screw. could be a zink or some kind of steel. It sticks very well to a neodymium magnets. I rapped a 12 gauge non-housed wired around it. The screw is about 3" long and about 3/16 diameter. I had enough wire to wind it from side to side 3 times which means I have 3 layers of wire.

Now I took that coil and passed a neodymium magnet by it slowly and fast. I also changed the probes of my multimeter incase I had them on the wrong side (I was checking it for DC). I also checked on AC. nothing. I tried doing that same thing on both sides of the coil because i don't know if the coil cares about North and South or not.

I ended up using this wheel i had. it has 4 neodymium magnets on it. 2 of them are pointing North and the other 2 are pointing south. this wheel is attached to a motor and it spins quickly. Now I have a coil (in my hand) pointing in alignment with a wheel of magnets. I had the multimeter probes testing the coil as the neodymium magnets spun in this order, North, North, South, South. I tested the coil in DC mode then switched the probes then, switched to AC. Then i rotated the whole coil and tried it on the other end. Tested on DC, switched the probes, then switched to AC.

I got nothing at all.

Recap. screw, 12 gauge wire coiled around it, no voltage at all.

shouldn't I be getting something? I mean, something? I don't care how much I get, i just wanna get something!

my questions: does the gauge of the wire matter? does it have to be a thin gauge or is 12 ok?

does the coil have a north and south? if so, does it mater when i am trying to do what im doing?

when passing the neodymium magnet by the coil, do they have to be on North or South? Or does that matter at all?

Some real help would be great! Thank guys!

I just added a pic of the coil in question. One side has a washer on the head of it and the other, doesnt.

Is this setup wrong? What would I need to change?

You made a solenoid - which is perfectly useful, but not for making electricity. The answer "wrap the wire in a circle" is basically correct - you have to make open loops of wire so that one side of the loop passes through the magnetic field and the other does not (or through much less or a different field)

Look at electric generation videos on YouTube and actually follow the directions for spinning or waving the coils past your magnets and you should see voltage jumps on your meter (not much current)

And I still hate that Y!A allows the questioner to put details in an answer when names don't show on the questions. Confuses Q&A

Coil structure it's continue lope of the insulated wire (Repid Insulated wire) in a form of spring mode .

Gage of the wire and length of the wire(amount of the turns) will determinate voltage and amperage that will be produced.

There's two result by coil 1- connect to electricity you will get magnetic filed 2- pass the magnet trough or above it ,you will get electricity .

You can make your own coil swing machine with two flat board and on round board between .

You can make any shaped coil for this if a magnetic flux linked with a coil changes an emf is induced In coil. It never matter the shape but size

Just wrap wire in a circle.
