Why do some vehicle's steering wheels lock up when the engine shuts off?

The steering wheel doesn't lock up. It's that the power steering assist is no longer available when the engine is stopped or dies. You can still steer the vehicle but it just takes more effort.

I've never heard of a steering wheel locking up unless you remove the key. If the engine shuts down then the power steering shuts down with it and so do the brakes. Some vehicles require super human strength to steer with the engine off.

It would not be completely locked up - no cars are designed to be that way. However the power to the steering is lost making need a much higher amout of force on the wheel to turn it and this will be harder the slower the car is moving.

All cars are this way - no there is no money to be made here - tough luck on that one.

GM recall

My engine shut off for no reason the other day while i was driving in traffic and i almost got into an accident because the steering wheel locked up. Luckily there was a curve in front of me so i was able to pull to the side.

WTF?

I could have died easily if I hadn't have gotten that lucky.

Can someone pls explain why some car manufacturers are dumb enough to lock the steering wheel when the engine shuts off?

Is there money to be made in the vehicle accident industry or sumthin'?
