My emergency brake doesn't work, and the brake light is always on?

I have a 1998 v6 mustang and the e-brake doesn't work. When I drive the emergency brake light is always on. What's the problem and how do I fix it?

They said EMERGENCY BRAKE!! The emergency brake are cables.......nothing to do with the master cylinder or anything else! The light stays on because the switch isn't disengaging due to the position of the emergency brake pedal or arm. Once you install new cables that problem should resolve itself! If the light doesn't go out after installing new cables allowing the pedal or arm to reposition itself correctly, pull the two battery cables off the battery, hold them together for about 15 seconds and then put them back on. That cancels out the ECM and forces it to reapply default settings. Everything should be good to go.

Come on man! Your brakes are completely ruined, and VERY soon you won't even be able to brake at all.

You have to do a COMPLETE brake flush most likely...and add in brake fluid, change ALL of your brakes including with brake pads (duh) and then give it a shot. Or it can be possible that the caliper's are destroyed as well and it's causing a leak.

change all brakes first

Check the brake fluid, it could just be a little low. The brake light isn't just for the emergency brake, it also tells you that the fluid level is low, which has nothing to do with the emergency brake.

The brake light comes on for the emergency brake when it's set on so you know it's on, that's all. It does not indicate a problem with the emergency brake.

EDIT: This is assuming that you have only one brake warning light, and not a separate one for the emergency brake. And by "emergency" brake I mean parking brake!

You need a mechanic to fix the brakes. You don't know where to start so I doubt you should try and play with it yourself!
