I have a 2004 ford Taurus yesterday my alternater belt poped will that affect my engine? and about how much does it cost to get my belt put back on? Thats for your help

You can't drive it without the serpentine drive belt on it, the part is under $30 and you can do it with a breaker bar by putting a socket on the tension pulley bolt with counter or clockwise leverage depending on the tension arm. There are several engines that year/model, the tension pulley will have a spring loaded arm and it should be shown on the under hood belt routing diagram radiator shroud sticker. I'm not sure if you mean the belt broke or slipped off by your usage of popped.

@ Dan H - Those pulleys are also cheap to replace. $250 is an exorbitant price to pay for that repair.

a couple of bucks for a new belt if you do it yourself.

The part is about 25 bucks or so. You should not run the engine without the belt, you would be risking serious engine damage

You have to find out why the belt fell off. Sometimes the belts just fail, but usually, there is an underlying reason - with one of the pulleys, the tensioner or the idler pulley. I always change the idler pulley, the tensioner and inspect carefully all the other pulleys when changing the serpentine belt.

You are looking at around $250 for all of that.

It needs to be determined why the belt came off in the first place. You may have a bad tensioner/pulley or a frozen AC compressor. The power steering and alternator are also suspect. If you mess with this yourself make sure to spin all the pulleys that the belt goes around before replacing the belt.

Don't drive without belt. Car will get flat battery in short time. Dealer or any garage can give you a firm price over phone once provided with full details.

Depends on the make model and year of the car, some of the newer cars you need to pretty much take the whole engine out to get at the belt.

No idea about cost but yes, driving without an alternator belt is not a good idea. The charging system won't work so the engine will run on just battery power until the battery is depleted and then you will be stuck.

Also, most vehicles these days do not have separate belts for each drive accessory but rather one serpentine belt which drives all accessories. If this is the case in your Taurus, you're also looking at no power steering, no A/C, and, worst of all, no engine cooling ( if the water pump is also driven by this belt ).
