Extended warranty and maintenance plans for a new car, are they worth it/?

Extended warranty plans are huge profit makers for the people who sell them. That tells you that they are a waste of money for the consumer.

Of course, to the person who buys a lemon, the warranty can be a very good thing. On a new car, the first few years are covered by the manufacturer's warranty so the extended warranty is useless during that time period.

Your new Sentra could easily last you 15 years or more if you take care of it.

Maintenance on a new car is generally minimal. If you add up what maintenance costs you to do versus what the maintenance plan costs, then it is almost always cheaper to do the maintenance yourself.

Well, I do not agree totally with these people. The way I do this with a NEW car purchase is I do not buy any warranty initially. The new car warranty covers the car for some significant time period and miles. As the car approaches the end of the new car warranty I make a choice on whether to buy an extended warranty based on how well the car has held up, what CR says the overall reliability is and the cost of the warranty.

An aftermarket "extended warranty" is the biggest LEGAL scam going these days with used car salesmen... But since you've already paid for the coverage, there is nothing to "cash in". Might as well keep it, AND the car.

Next time, just say "NO!"

normally it is a waste of money and never worth it. the extended warranty only covers the engine and tranny. so unless you just neglect them and don't get the oil and fluids changed out. then you don't have anything to really worry about. all new cars come with atleast a 3 year/ 36000 miles warranty already. and if the car doesn't break down by then, then it more then likely will not.

I purchased a 2012 new Nissan Sentra with the extended warranty and maintenance plan. My brother in law who was a claims adjuster tells me it is not a good deal as today cars are made to last as well as you do not have to service the car at the dealer and pay their high prices? It is about a year and a half into the 5 year or 100,00 mile plan. Should I cash one or both plans in and take whatever money is in out? I originally thought I was going to keep the car at least the 5 years but am not so sure now.
