Can I put my car into neutral while driving with a manual transmission?

I just learned how to drive manual and wanted to know if it's bad to put the car into neutral once I have picked up enough speed. is it bad for the car if I do this?

Yes you can. In fact you put it in neutral every time you change gears. It is not recommended to coast in neutral. You can put it in neutral and release the clutch while setting at a long traffic light, or going thru a drive thru. This saves wear on the throw out bearing.

? Putting the car in neutral means it is not in gear any more and the car will slow down to a stop. I think maybe you need to read up on what gears and the transmission in a car are for and how they work.

Yes you can do this (in some areas it's called angel gear) but,it is bad driving practice, if you have the incorrect revs and gear when you come out of neutral you can do damage to the motor, driveshaft and diff.

Also it is illegal as it is considered "not having full control off a vehicle.

In the UK this is illegal. Called coasting and is illegal for a very sound reason. Your engine could stop while you are doing this and you may not notice until you try to steer and or brake when you will find that you have lost the power to those.

It can damage some gearboxes if this is dome too

It won't hurt your car but it's not recommended. Not only that it's illegal. If you were to get into an accident and it was found out that you were coasting down a hill, you will probably be found at fault AND your insurance will probably deny paying out. As far as they're concerned, you were driving in a dangerous and reckless manner. Most insurers have a clause that voids coverage for reckless driving.

It doesn't save anything worth mentioning and it doesn't slow wear on anything.

Yes you can . I have coasted a long way down hill at times and it will not damage anything with a standard .

I guess, but that is a poor driving style.

Your car should ALWAYS be in the proper gear, you should only go in to neutral when not moving, when your stopped or almost stopped. .

Save gas by a lot
