Whats the average salary for a software engineer?

Posted at: 2015-01-07
Graduate salary will depend on a lot of factors but probably around 23K

Computer science or software engineering degrees would be most relevant. However many go into software engineering careers from other scientific degrees such as physics and electronic engineering.

Well, I guess the answer would really depend on your personality type, and the exact position. It is hard to give a list that would apply to all people in all positions.

Typically, a sofware engineer has to have an analytical mind, and excellent attention to detail. One needs to be patient to work through tough bugs, and persistent to see problems through to the end.

If these sound appealing, they could be seen as advantages; if not, perhaps disadvantages.

Some developers work primarily alone, and others work on dynamic teams. It all depends on where you work, and how their departments are structured.

So it's really all how you look at it. I can say that there is one huge advantage to being a software engineer : job demand is steady, and will continue to be so. Technology is becoming ever more pervasive, so if you are a good software engineer, you will most likely never have trouble getting a job. And the money is usually pretty decent too.

Hope this helps : )

I don't know a specific figure for a graduate salary, but it's most probably above national average with plenty of opportunity for promotion. It really depends on what size company you work for.

Yes, you could work anywhere in the world, but there are of course places that one thinks of when thinking of large software engineering companies.

The UK for example is a large employer of SE's. Companies like ARM in the Cambridge area employ plenty of graduates. America, South Korea, China, CERN.

As for what you need to study, no you don;t need to study computer science. A degree in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, maths or physics are all capable of leading you down that path.

Hope that answers a few of your questions.

When i was a software engineer the salary was below the national.average.

last time i looked a graduate lucky enough to find a job would get £17k.

because the work is quite specialised, expect to have to move to find a job.

Its 3-4 years to get a BSc, depending on whether you do a years industrial placement. i'm not sure about MSc but i think that would be a further year or two.

how much does he make in his first year? can a software engineer find a job anywhere in the world? am curious because i've been searching everywhere for a legit answer so maybe you could help me. does a software engineer have to study computer science in order to reach his job? i am not sure but how long does it take in university/college to reach a masters degree in computer science? sorry for all the questions but am really desperate to find a answer so if you can help me it will be worth the go please?
