What would be the reason a car did nothing but click when I turned the ignition?

It started after being jumped by a tow truck.

Didn't the tow truck driver say when starting it?? Usually a low charge in your battery -the tick will get slower and stop.

Get a new battery if it's more than a few years old and get a mains battery charger and some decent jump leads (both cheap compared to a recovery call out unless you're paying for it anyway).

If you make lots of short journeys your battery may run flat quite quickly as the alternator doesn't now charge as fast as your use, especially this time of year when you start using the heater and lights more.

Yep, your battery was too low to start your car, the clicking if the starter solenoid engaging in and out without enough power to hold and spin the gear. The power needed to start your car is reduced when the outside temps go down.

You most likely need a new battery, soon.

Might be battery, might be alternator, might be dirty connections (usually at neg battery post). Buy a $20 charger, and charge the battery overnight at 2 amps. If it now starts and runs, and holds a charge overnight the next night, battery likely is fine. If not, likely need battery. If you have a voltmeter (around $8 for a cheap one), check voltage across battery posts with engine running -- should be around 14 volts. If lower running than engine off, alternator is suspect. If battery shows full charge (12.0 to 12.6 vdc with engine off) and engine won't start, suspect either starter or dirty neg battery post.

New battery needed.

No charge on battery.

Your battery was probably super drained.

dead battery
