What do you do if car fuel leaks into well water?

The chances of you pumping the well dry this time of the year is slim but you do need to leave a water hose on until it runs clean again. The pump will stir the water enough to cause the gas to get out, your smelling it now aren't you? Just a thought since you have a well I;m guessing you have a on lot septic system, it would be very unwise to put water down the drain if you do. And it might be a good idea to contact a well driller and ask for a sealed cap for the well.

Our well cap is in our driveway and has been since we moved in years ago. We figured the well has been there since the horse and buggy days so fuel leaking wasn't an issue. Just discovered on of our cars leaked gas and for almost three days now our water smells like gas. This all happened on the holiday and weekend so no one to call yet. We're trying to flush it out by using laundry, dishwasher...a lot to do so. Please only those experienced with wells answer...do we need to dig a new well or will this flush out and are there any other dangers?

you cannot drink it, the well is now contaminated, you can try to pump the well dry, gas will float to the top so pump or skim the top of the well water if you are able to suck up the gas, then pump the well dry, you will need to do this several times and even then there is no guarantee that you will be able to get all the gas out, I still would not drink it,

*IF* this water well is for public use, a spill of like five or more gallons has to be reported the the EPA.
