I designed parts of two nuclear power plants. Worked on the construction of two (not mutually inclusive). Worked on maintenance and rehab of a fourth. So I have a little experience.
They usually stick radioactive material in and generate power by turning water into steam and making the steam turn a turbine.
It is a much cleaner way of making power than coal as far as emissions go, and so long as the waste management is done well and the plant does not get struck by some freak natural disaster they are pretty efficient... but there are always risks associated, and everyone knows Chernobyl and Fukushima.
I believe that nuclear energy is the future for this world. There have been several safety improvements in recent decades. Even with the problem of waste storage, it is still cleaner than oil, coal, and natural gas. I wish they would build mini reactors for my home. Why not, they power navy ships with them.
