Replacing CV joints?

Posted at: 2015-01-07
I was told by a mechanic that the CV joints on my 97 Honda Accord need to be replaced. I got a quote of $450 to relace both of the joints. Is this a good price? I live in NJ.

He's quoting the price based on the book time from the manufacture. So if the book says takes two hrs to replace one shaft you paying the shop rate x 4.0hrs. Here is the kick in the pants. With parts in hand and air tools. I can do both in under 1 hr Because Ive done hundreds. But legally I can charge you the book time

Money in my pocket, from your pocket. Thats what makes it profitable. They also mark up parts 200% from wholesale which would make the cost more then what you pay retail. Reason being it the parts fail I still make a profit and get the free manufacture warranty replacement

Hope it helps

Why not get another estimate somewhere else? A CV joint is a simple device but the labor takes time. A CV joint may be $75 each. Check online or at a parts store. Mechanics charge based on some book that gives them a reason to charge for 3 hours of labor when the work is done in half the time. It is a business

Complete axles are cheap at Advance Auto. Probably $110 each. $125 a side to install them. The price is in the ball park. Make sure they are doing the complete axle replacement.

Rebuild axle shaft retail for about $150 each. Add in labor and you're at $450

Yea thats a fair price. I assume he's replacing the whole axle.

Go get a quote from another garage to compare. You KNOW what needs to be replaced now so you can name the repair.

Yeah, that seems like a very reasonable price.

yeah that sounds about right, if your not sure call another workshop for an estimate if its more then its good, if its cheaper then take it their, if its the same well decide who you think will do the best job or who you would rather give business to.
