if the car is older has more than say 150K miles or so its the valves.. the wear out over time and begin to rattle around inside the heads. Nor much can be done besides new heads but if the motor is at that point might as well rebuild the entire motor..

Ticking is usually lifters. Without hearing the actual noise though anyone can only guess.

In my case, that ticking means there is something wrong with the tires. I had the same experience. Just take it for repairs and tell them exactly what and where you heard it. Good luck!
