Well again I see people condemning the compressor just because you said it was bad. The shop if you ask me should have done a few tests before they made that claim but you have failed to mention if they did or not. There are relays fuses and pressure switches involved with powering on of the A/C clutch. If the shop had hooked up a set of gauges I'd think they would have done the minimum but I don't think they did that and are willing to rip you off. Did they even put a test light on the leads to the compressor clutch? You can do that much yourself you know. No power means the clutch is not bad it is somewhere else in the system.

The pulley/clutch on the a/c compressor is a wear part, so it is made to be fairly easy to replace. Maybe an hours work just to swap the pulley, plus the cost of the part. Certainly no thousand bucks...

The clutch on my air in my grand am has been making a noise for about 9 months but hasnt went out yet. Air still works and the noise stops when the air is on.

Welcome to the high cost of A/C repair. you have to do both. Shop around, there may be a cheaper price.

There is a whole unit for $213 on eBay brand new just seem it missing the original package, if it cost you $200 to have it changed and freon recharged would be a fair price I think. So aprox. About $500 all together.

The auto repair shop i took it to wont replace just the AC clutch they are saying they have to replace both the AC clutch and the compressor, which is making it around 1500.00 to fix! Can anyone tell me if they both have to be fixed or if I can just have someone replace the clutch? Also, does anyone know apx. how much the clutch is to replace?

Thanks in advance for any help!! :)
