EE can open the way to many fields, including nuclear physics (the practical, experimental side, not the theoretical). As a degree, it's got more entryways than computer science into many different fields, including places open to computer science degrees, like computer and systems design. While there is nothing wrong with computer science as a discipline, I've tended to trust EE people more than CS people when it comes to running and managing projects.
So, I tend to agree with your father - EE is the better degree.
But then, it depends on the person. One of my sons would have done better in CS than he ever would have in EE, and many people I know who did go into EE would have been better off going with CS, but overall, the CS people I know (many who switched from EE to CS) often lament that CS is limiting their careers.
Father is right...computer nerds are ten a penny, and getting cheaper, 'cos it's so easy.
I used to get stacks of resumes when we were hiring, and my first scan was to look for all the ones that talked about computers and bin them Then I would read the rest and make choices.
Going forward, EE is better as CS employment seems to get limited. But you can always keep your fingers crossed if you have chosen CS>
Actually, there both great fields. This is because both of them are rapidly growing. It seems to be completely opinionated to say one is better than the other right now. I would suggest you pursue the one that interests you more.
Every time I mention to my dad "I'm pretty sure that I want to switch my major from electrical engineering to computer science" he always says things like "you wont have nearly as many job opportunities your much better off to not switch majors". Is that really true? I just don't understand. He pays for my college so I cant switch unless I was able to convince him. He's just really against computer science for some reason. He thinks that Electrical Engineering is by far the best degree. Is that honestly true?
