Sand blasting is the only way I know of to remove the rust.. but most blocks well have surface rust due to their construction.. and the engine paint well cover fine.. as long as all the grease is removed.. After sand blasting you would need to paint it right away or the rust well re-start to form..
good luck

Sand blasting would work best , price out renting one at a rental yard .
Naval Jelly from any hardware store.
I have a feeling you won't be teaching him anything useful after reading this question!
Scrub it with seafoam deep creep spray
I have an 305 chevy engine block that has been sitting for a couple of years and I want to take it apart to show my son how it works, also would like it clean before I show him, dont care if the cleaning method hurts bearings, bores, etc. The engines sole purpose is for learning, absolutely no functionality... something cheap and easy please, heard some things about acid baths and soaking? Please let me know if you can elaborate on this. Thanks!!
