Depends on the year and model. In "older" cars, simple switches at the hinge side of each door control the dome and interior lights. The headlamp switch also turns them on when turned all the way to the left or "bright" dash lights (or a switch right near the switch.)
Newer cars have timers and the like to allow you to exit the vehicle and have the lights stay on for a few seconds.
it really depends upon the car and the year.
(If disconnecting the battery doesn't do it, I would start to get concerned that something sinister is afoot!)
Turn the light switch counter clockwise. You could have a bad door switch.
