Converting kilo to mega?

Posted at: 2015-01-07
Short Story...

1 Kw = 10^-3 MW

10 Kw = 0.01 MW

Long Story...

I try to write atleast 10 lines in Yahoo answers...

1 kW = 1000 watts..

1 W = (1 / 1000) kilowatts..-----X

1 MW = 1000000 watts...

1 W = ( 1/1000000) Megawatts...------Y

Equate X and Y because LHS = 1W on both equations

so

(1 / 1000) kilowatts = ( 1/1000000) Megawatts

so

1 Kilowatt = 1000 / 1000000 Megawatts...

10 Kilowatt = 10000 / 1000000 Megawatts = 0.01 Megawatts...

I'll try to give some theory behind it (it has other uses too, such as a moving "sqrt(2)" from the bottom of a fraction to the top of fraction, and conversion between units of different sizes like meter to feet etc

treat the k and M prefixes much like algebraic variables, and write down an equation which says how of M equals how many k

1 MW = 1000 kW

next move one of the prefixes over to the other side of the equation (divide both sides by the same thing), and ensure the identity equals one eg

diving both sides by kW gives...

1MW/kW = 1000

and then dividing both sides by 1000...

(1/1000)(MW/kW)=1

when you manipulate an equation you must ensure "the same thing" is done to both sides so the relationship doesn't change..

If you multiply both sides by one you don't fundamentally change an equation. The previous work showed that (1/1000)(MW/kW)=1 , so given what you started from anytime you need to multiply by 1 you can use (1/1000)(MW/kW). the trick is multipling one side of the equation by this special form of 1, and the other side by literal *1,

say you have

P = 10kW

multiply both sides by *1, and then replace one of the *1 by that special form of 1

P*1 =10 kW *1

P*1= 10kW *(1/1000)(MW/kW)

"a * 1 = a" so things can be simplified and rearranged.

P=(10/1000)(MW*kW/kW)

"a/a=1" so the kW/kW also equals 1

P=(10/1000)(MW*1 )

P= 1/100 MW

hope this helps.

a heck of lot of maths and physics is about spotting where things are just the same thing said in a different way, and how to transform things into other forms for which it's easier to do a particular kind of manipulation. Not the best primer on it, but it's to do with something called canonical forms http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canonical_f...

10 kilowatts= 10^3 watts

Let 10^3 watts =10^3 *10^3* 10^-3 watts= 10^6 *10^-3 watts= 10^-3 megawatts (Since 10^6 watts= 1 megawatts)

1 mega watt is equal to 1000 kw

To convert 10kw to mw we divide it by 1000 to get 0.01mw

10kw(1mw/1000kw) = 0.01mw

Let say for example you have kilowatts and megawatts. I want to kno how you actually convert them.

I know that kilo is 10^3 and mega is 10^6 and so on.

but if we had lets say 10 kilowatts. I can't seem to get the right answer
