What can I do about my alternator?

If you're referring to the positive terminal at the back that goes to the battery, you're screwed. There is no way to repair that without replacing internal parts, which simply isn't worth it.

If you can't afford the $100 for a new alternator, you can't afford to drive this car. Sorry to say that, but what's your plan when something really serious comes along?

An alternator is about $69 rebuilt at the auto parts store with a 1 year warranty. U can't afford $69? If not you should not have a car because of events like this. Unless it's a bmw or Mercedes Etc then they're around $149 at advanced auto, rebuilt. That putty you are talking about hardens like steel. I've used it on a radiator but heat makes it come loose eventually. Thing is the alternator requires the bolt to be tight enough where it is snug flush to the alternator. All that putty will do is hold it in place. It won't tighten the broken bolt. That's why your amps are low. It's not connected tight enough. Go buy a used one in a junk yard for $35. They take not even 10 mins to put on if its on top of the engine, and requires usually a 13mm socket and a screw driver to pry it up and tighten the belt. They sell the tools at the dollar store ya know.

The person that told you to use an epoxy is an idiot. Just wait until that cable breaks off again as it surely will! The alternator main cable is not fused. When it shorts out the battery will overheat and explode blowing battery acid all over the engine compartment. If you don't lose your eyes you'll at least need a new motor harness and whatever else gets drenched in acid!

Positive Bolt? The main terminal out of the alternator ? You can't glue it unless it conducts electricity which 99% don't. Your going to wind up spending more money on temporary fixes then just buying a new alternator

which is the only solution You can get a junk yard cheapo but no guarantee it works.

Hope it helps

An auto electric shop can replace the stud that broke off and rebiuld it for you.

You can probably take the alternator apart and replace the bolt.

dont bother, replace it, sorry, i dont know your background. id take it apart and repair it, but you are not me

In attempt to loosen the positve bolt attached to my alternator, it broke off...completely. So I took it to advanced auto parts and they said I need to replace the whole alternator-which I do not have the money for-so I asked what else could be done to reattach it and he said to try this steel paste....like there were two tubes to mix and I put on both pieces and it stuck. So I turned my car back on and now the voltage is really low, but stable. I have a sound system so when I turn it up, the battery doesn't go down or anything, so it seems like the alternator is on...but it isn't charging the battery enough. Is there anything else I can do? I really can't replace the alternator. All help is appreciated!
