Ram air intake, is it legal? (UK)?

Posted at: 2015-01-07
Hi I was wondering if it is legal to have a ram air intake or relocated cold air intake on a road going car in the UK?

Dr + Mrs Bears Face is wrong. Try reading the regulations which are published on line.

Modifications they are talking about are to the structure of the car.

It then requires an SVA test.

Modifications such as bolt on bits are not included.

Where there have been cuts in the structure then it can cause issues quite correctly.

If the intake is not a danger to pedestrians and does not increase the sound levels above those allowed and you tell your insurance company then all is fine.

If it was not true all Police cars would become instantly illegal as would many vehicles used by local authorities and other organisations.

Evelyn is correct about it being pointless on a modern engine but as he says it is your money.

Hi actually no one has got it right if it was made without this as standard it is not legal. so not designed to have it classified as a modification from 1st jan 2014 it is an illegal modification and can get the car crushed.

sadly as too many modifications have caused too many accidents the insurance companies have all lined up against such things.

so time to not go there.

Just tell the Insurance dudes, who will probably stick £30 on your premium, but that's better than a rejected claim........because you 'didn't' !

@ Dr Bearface. Why oh Why do you keep trolling out this rubbish about cars being "Crushed" for the slightest non-standard item ? It's simply not true. Loads of people have picked you up on it.....Including qualified MOT testers !........and STILL you keep on and on with it..........

As many people have asked you 'Where is this piece of legalisation' ? You NEVER reply with any reference or link.

So why not 'Put up or shut up'?

Both legal yet totally pointless. It's your money, go for it.

Yes there legal to have fitted.

Cosmetic bits are allowed, as long as they don't cut the b***s of any pedestrian you might hit. It's the sort of thing that might get the attention of plod though, and will need to be notified to insurers (or claim denied!), with certain extra premium

As long as your insurer knows about it so that you have valid cover that wont be cancelled if you claim (any assessor could not fail to miss such an obvious mod)
