Car Problem: Accidentally Shifted into Park While Going Downhill... What's the damage?

Damage to the parking pawl would be about it.

If the car drives normally, you got lucky. Don't depend on "Park" to hold the car: ALWAYS use the parking brake, now.

(Future: Take a few minutes to understand how your shifter works. There's an interlock, either a button, or a sideways motion required, before you can go from "drive" into "reverse". Yes, going into "2", or "L" for a long downhill was the right thing to do. But keep your hand off of that interlock, so you don't accidentally go past "N" on the way back. Learn how that works with the car stationary.)

Probably made a terrible ratcheting/grinding noise from the Parking Pawl in the trans, sometimes no real damage is done, sometimes the Pawl and corresponding parts are destroyed. If the car will engage and stay in park plus not roll when in park you may be OK. Wouldn't hurt to have a trans man drive and inspect, then go from there.

I don't think ANYONE could "accidentally" shift into park friend. it's nowhere near "D".

Stop making up stories.

BS or stupidity. Almost all newer models have an interlock to prevent this.

I was driving down a really steep hill and was messing with down shifting my transmission to try and save my breaks. I accidentally shifted too far and into reverse and then in my panic shifted into park. How bad is the damage going to be? The whole thing happened in maybe less than 30 seconds. When my car thankfully stopped at the bottom and I had shifted it into drive. The problem then was that the car had stalled (I think) it wouldn't drive. I had to stop and restart my car to get it to drive again. I was able to drive it the rest of the way home with no issues. How bad could the damage be? I drive a 98' Grand Prix if that helps. Engine is a 3600 V6
