Why dont be build a giant solar panel, build it in space. have it charge up giant batteries, send them back to?

Batteries don't store enough energy and are too heavy to move in/out of orbit. The energy to lift a set of batteries into orbit is thousands time the energy the batteries could store.

But there are plans to do just that, except solar energy would be converted to microwaves, which would be beamed to a receiver on earth, which would convert them to electricity.

$$$$ Money, it would cost way too much.

You will spend more energy putting the batteries in orbit and you will get out of them when they return.

Now, if you had some kind of ultra high energy density battery maybe it’s not such a bad idea. Unfortunately I don’t think current technology is anywhere near close to making one that would be cost effective.

I’ve read about ideas of transmitting microwave energy back and converting that. There are issues with it, but still not such a bad idea.

I’ve also tossed around the idea of concentrating light and focusing it on the earths surface like a big magnifying glass frying an ant. :o)

(considering all that could go wrong – it may be a bad idea)

How do you get the empty batteries up to the solar station to charge them?

The energy required to send things to and from the station would far exceed what a solar station could produce, even a very large one.

Batteries too heavy.

Discussed transmission of power via microwaves...

If we had a space elevator, we could send batteries up and down for almost free. But Earth's gravitation is too strong for our materials. Then it would be a target for terrorists, so we go without...

Why not use lasers to transmit the energy to a receiver on earth and do away with the batteries?

Unfortunately, that's prohibitively expensive. It's expensive enough to even have a solar panel built.

I think we could make solar space stations, big enough and alot of them to make alot of giant batteries to power the U.S. Have new models of the space shuttles to reterieve them. and send them back up. I think it would produce alot of jobs and new technology. i use batteries in my iphone, which is ike a minutare computer. i think we can make a nation run on them too. waste may be a issue though. So what do you think?
