What is the advantage of using 12 volt batteries instead of 24 volt batteries in a 120 KVA ups?

YOU KNOW, THE AC 60Hz, GENERATOR PRODUCES A VOLTAGE OF ABOUT 11Kv AND THIS IS Stepped up to 230kV before transmission. the reason is that losses are reduced because the current is that much lesser. For a 120kVA UPS, using 12V will mean 10,000 amps with efficiency of 1 while 24Vwill mean 5000 amps. [Efficiency cannot be 100% but can be 95% or of that order.] Perhaps you can place two 24V batteries in series and have 48V which will mean current will be 2500 amps. The advantage of lower current is the smaller size conductors for same drop. Are you sure 24V is MUCH better and will save a lot of physical space. I would think it does not save physical space.

And if the battery is used for back up, then a 30mins back up will require 24V with 500AH batteries. . The use of 12V will require 1000AH batteries for same back up time. And physical size of 24V 500AH battery may not be significantly less than that of a 12V 1000Ah battery. So physical size remaining almost same, conductor size reduction can be done when voltage is increased and current is reduced.

12 volt batteries are more common and probably less expensive. It is not obvious that 24 voltage batteries will be smaller for the same total energy stored.

Ths question is totally dpendent on what is being backed up, why and how long. You should talk to an application engineer from the supplier as to which is best for your needs.

Only advantage.......12V car battery is cheaper and easy to get.

Hello,

In our data center, we are planning to install a 120 kva ups. Obviously, using 24 volt batteries help us to save the physical space required. Even so, is there any advantage to use 12 volt bateries? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both. Please help.
