Should I replace my engine or get a new car?

In 2002 Nissan had catylitic converter recalls. the cats disintegrated causing engine damage. Nissan had to replace many cats and engines during recall. Nissan didn't like buying brand new engines from japan so they started collecting the old engine cores back and rebuilding them. of course they dropped the price because they didn't like paying 5K for engines.

bottom line ....QR25 engines remanufactured.....a few years ago when I retired they were less than 2K for a remanufactured long block. (complete engine). buy one and you should get a new catylitic converter as well. all you need is a gasket set and all your external parts just bolt on.

this is pretty cheap. call the dealer and get a current price on one of these engines.

IF THE RECALL WAS NEVER DONE ON YOUR CAR AND IT QUALIFIES AND THE CATYLITIC CONVERTER IS PROVEN TO BE THE FAILURE YOU WILL GET ALL THIS FOR FREE. CALL NISSAN DEALER, GIVE THEM YOUR VIN# THEY WILL CHECK FOR OPEN RECALLS......

RETIRED NISSAN MASTER TECH

My answer is if it is not locked up it always is fixable and cheap providing that the project when it is being done right and if you use the right sources it could be about 2 or 3 hundred and then that car cam be the most dependable car you have ever owned

this car is 12tears old and yes tears. and as Timothy said do replace as a newer model as your choice

also do get a newer mechanic to look at, if finances are not.

Nissan are quite easy to repair, and reliable

i do know as my daughter has one and i repair for her.

One of the best cars I have had was a 88 Sentra. I would still be driving it, if not for some clown running a stop sign. All I did was spark plugs and tires and oil. Then at 110k the A/C went out, but at 188k someone crashed into it.

Well generally unless you find metal shavings in the oil when you drain it, it can be repaired cheaper than buying another car or engine. I remember one time my car was making a funny noise which was getting louder & then it suddenly quit & the oil pressure light came on. I figured it was the oil pump so I pulled over & had it towed in. According to them, it had metal shavings in the oil, but to this day, I wonder if they were telling me the truth. I just took their word for it. I only took me like a minute to get it pulled over on the interstate so It makes me wonder.

So if I were you I would get a second opinion. Plus you can get another engine from the salvage yard for about $500. Garage may charge you a thousand to put it in but that's still a lot cheaper than another car.

Iwould recomend something more reliable in the long run.

if your car is overheating it doesnt nessicarilly mean you need a new engine, that is usaully a side effect of other problems.

My car (an 02 sentra) recently had its engine start over heating the moment we drive it. The mechanic said we needed a new engine. We've put about 4000 into this car and an engine would cost another 1500. So instead of constantly wasting money on a car that will break again soon, should I buy a new car?(By new I mean a new used one like 2008
