As a professional Engineer, would you find this gift tool helpful?

Strongly agree with nate and EMX46.

Here’s my opinion on each of the features.

it has a ruler,

-when I have to measure things it usually needs to have a precision down to at least .001 so I use a caliper micrometer.

a magnifying lens,

-I do like this, but also have loop magnifier glass in my desk draw (x2 x5 x10) in one assembly

a led light

-phone has a flashlight app :)

a pendrive

-Strictly forbidden to use that one at work, have a 16GB one on my keychain that’s about as big as a thumbnail, so I wouldn’t use that one

a screwdriver with multiple heads

-plausibly useful but likely not able to withstand much torque

within and a pen

-I always seem to be losing my pen so that would be nice… until I lose it.

At the end of the day I would not be happy with this since it’s kinda like all the widgets management manages to give out as gifts. Well intentioned but ultimately useless.

No.

1) Most engineers don't actually work on physical things, they design things on a computer and someone else does the dirty work. (Ducks, prepares for flame-war....)

2) Also, most 'gift' tools are useless for any real work. There is a reason professional tools cost money - they are made out of quality material designed for the job. There is nothing more frustrating than needing a screwdriver (or any tool), when you pull a cheap one out and literally disintegrates in your hands under moderate pressure...

The best gift from work is always more money, because then the employees can get what they REALLY want.

Nate, I'm going to kill you for that snide comment mate.

I have something similair to this, a swiss card that was gifted to me by my dad when he worked for Halliburton (has the logo on it and everything). I use it around the house every now and again but mostly gets used for picking swarf out of my person when I've been "doing their dirty work for them" cos they couldn't figure out how to use a spanner.

As for the question/offer, I would have to decline I'm afraid. For a few reasons: one being that the tools in that card would most certainly not be able to stand up to what we use them for; the second being that we are supplied with our own tools by the company that have been verified as being good to use for their intended purpose; and finally, we would get our asses kicked (probably sacked too) if anything were to malfunction due to using tools that are not fit for purpose (and that are not covered by insurance).

As for use around the house- Never going to use half those things, so still no haha

I have something similar with a knife and tweezers in lieu of light, pen, and screwdriver, and has been sitting in my drawer for several years, untouched except to take it out as a conversation piece.

I found the folding, light weight but strong shopping bags to be the most useful and thumb drives. These, I use consistently.

As a man who carries his wallet in his back pocket I would find it very uncomfortable indeed. Also, I think that the Swiss penknife people have already done most of this.

They also do a card by the way with tools in

More junk that will never be very useful except to look at!(excuse the grammar)

The Swiss knife basically fills the need already.

the tool is a card shape, it fits into your wallet, it has a ruler, a magnifying lens, a led light a pendrive a screwdriver with multiple heads within and a pen. This all fits into a 8mm thick card. Its made from phenolic. ( the body) Now imagine if you get this as a gift from your company, . REMEMBER its a luxury item, a gift, not a necessity. Its size is like an average credit card. ^_^ Would you like it? :) How useful would you find it and why would you like it?
